Each year, our crews train towards 3 major intercollegiate regattas, each held at the end of the respective terms (Christ Church Regatta in Michaelmas Term; Torpids Regatta in Hilary Term; and Summer VIIIs Regatta in Trinity Term). Alongside these races, SABC also participates in other Oxford regattas, such as the Nephthys Regatta, Isis Winter League (IWL), Oriel Regatta, Autumn Fours, and others.

Here is a brief overview of the 3 main regattas:

Christ Church Regatta

When: 7th Week of Michaelmas Term
Crews: Novice crews
Race-type: Head-to-head (two teams)
Duration of regatta: 4 days

Overview: Two crews, comprised entirely of novices, race head-to-head up the Isis. The course is straight. Crews who are defeated in the first round have the chance to compete for a second time against a different crew.

Torpids (Bumps Racing)

When: 7th Week of Hilary Term
Crews: All crews
Race type: Bumps race
Duration of regatta: 4 days

Overview:
13 boats line up, each behind the other, in single file, at points along the river.
The rules are simple - if you hit the boat in front of you, you pass it cleanly, or the cox concedes, you've earned yourself a bump.
If the boat behind you catches you before you do this, then you have been bumped.
If you row the entire course without bumping or being bumped, then you've "rowed on".

A boat which is bumped continues to row the entire length of the course, giving them the chance to regain their place in the line-up, if they manage to bump back the crew in front. Of course, this also means that a crew can be bumped multiple times by other boats, causing them to potentially fall down several places during one race.

Anything else? The thirteenth boat (the first boat in the division) is known as the "sandwich boat" and must compete twice - in the division where it is currently in first place, and in the division above, where it will compete in thirteenth place.

Summer VIIIs

When: 5th Week of Trinity Term
Crews: All crews
Race type: Bumps race
Duration of regatta: 4 days

Overview:
The same rules apply as that of Torpids (bumps racing), except for one major exception - a boat which is bumped is out of the race, meaning that they cannot regain their position in the line-up. It also means that coxes are less likely to concede. For this reason, Summer VIIIs can be a more exhilarating race.

How do you earn "blades"?
Ah, the elusive "blades"... to earn "blades" a crew must bump every single race (ie. get a bump on all four days). It's easier said than done, however, especially if you are unlucky enough to be the "sandwich boat" of the division.
